Every year on June 14th, the world celebrates World Blood Donor Day as a way to honor voluntary blood donors for their gifts of life and to increase awareness of the need for safe and sufficient blood supplies.

The event was established by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and other organizations.

The date, June 14th, was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, the Austrian immunologist who discovered the ABO blood group system. This discovery revolutionized transfusion medicine and made blood transfusions safer.
