National Dengue Awareness Month is observed annually in June, established through Proclamation No. 1204 on April 21, 1998, by former President Fidel V. Ramos. Dengue, identified by the Department of Health (DOH) as a year-round ailment, sees an increase in cases during the rainy season, attributed to the proliferation of breeding sites for the disease-carrying Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

The Philippines has experienced periodic spikes in dengue cases, resulting in public health crises and intensified awareness initiatives. Urban expansion, population increase, insufficient sanitation, and methods of water storage are the common factors that contribute to the proliferation of breeding sites for mosquitoes, increasing the risk of dengue transmission.

Here are some simple methods to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in your home and enhance your defense against dengue:

1. Regularly cover and clean water containers, including pet bowls, plant trays, and flower vases, as stagnant water attracts mosquitoes for egg-laying.

2. Maintain cleanliness both indoors and outdoors by avoiding clutter that can harbor mosquitoes and their eggs, such as old tires and water-filled storage containers.

3. Wear protective clothing like long-sleeved shirts and pants, particularly during dengue outbreaks in your area, to minimize mosquito bites indoors and outdoors.

4. Invest in a mosquito net to safeguard yourself while sleeping, ensuring it is intact and properly sealed to maximize protection.

5. Install screens on windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

6. Use insecticides effective against mosquitoes indoors, ensuring they are safe for household use. Exercise caution with mosquito coils and keep them out of children's reach.

7. Dispose of waste properly using closed trash bins and maintain regular trash removal. Segregating trash may deter insects from entering your home.

8. Clean and drain roof gutters, pools, fountains, and bathtubs regularly to prevent water accumulation.

9. Apply mosquito repellent to exposed skin, especially during the rainy season or when exposed to insects. Consult a doctor before using repellents on children.

While dengue is not transmitted from person to person, infected mosquitoes can spread the virus after biting an infected individual, contributing to dengue transmission within households.

Join us, here at Gensan Medical Center, as we spread awareness about dengue prevention! Together, let's eradicate breeding sites, shield ourselves with repellents, and ensure community safety.

Gensan Medical Center is accepting cases such as dengue fever. We have facilities here that could accommodate dengue patients in the best way possible. Dengue Duo kit is also available here in our hospital. It is a diagnostic test used to detect the presence of dengue virus antigens and antibodies in a patient's blood sample.

You may visit us here at National Highway, Purok Veterans, Barangay Calumpang, General Santos City, or book an appointment with us for consultation and health check-up.
